“These paintings project the atmosphere of landscape, the rolling hills, moorland and rivers in this particular part of the first and much loved National Park in England. The process of building many layers of paint over time, eroding and repainting has echoes in the way the landscape has developed. Many of these works are painted in situ.
In the studio, I refer to the many plein air paintings, sketches and collages that I make, to keep a spontaneous and fresh feel to the work.
The paintings convey the essence of a place, a landscape that is still evolving and with weather that is constantly changing. I attempt to walk the tightrope between representational and expressive painting.”
