Who is the course for?

Anyone who wants to take their painting to a new level and expand their experience of composition, mark making and developing their ideas into completed paintings.

Do I need to live by the sea to take this course?

No, you can use your sketches or mine. If you want to get out and make your own photos & sketches that’s great but don’t worry if you can’t.

You may have images or ideas from previous visits to the coast. I’ll show you how to approach it to get the most out of them.

At the start of the course, you’ll watch me making a series of photos and sketches. These will all be available if you want to work alongside me.

I am equally as happy for you to follow along with what I’m doing in the demos to make your own versions of my paintings, or for you to work from your own ideas, photos and sketches to make something completely different to what I’m doing.

energy and atmosphere

Painting on the coast is a special experience. There’s so much variety and sometimes the apparent simplicity of the subject can make it hard to express how it makes you feel.

In this two week course we’ll be exploring different approaches to composition and how to use colour & mark making to get the most out of your time painting by the sea.

The following students have kindly allowed me to share their experiences from being on my previous workshops.

“Having taken several online courses since the pandemic, Lewis’s are hands-down the best because he tailors them to accommodate artists of all abilities and styles— from beginner to advanced; from representational to abstract. A compassionate, generous teacher, his lessons are detailed and easy to follow. I can honestly say that Lewis has helped me take my art to a new level. Last year, I felt confident enough to have a show and sold almost every painting!”

“It's a course on how to turn your experiences in the landscape into an abstracted visual story that's unique and personal
I've taken some popular 12 week courses multiple years in a row and never really understood how to convey my own experiences outdoors in an abstract way until I took your course. The way you teach how to do that is simply brilliant.”
